Laura (26), Head Sommelier of Hotel TerraVina boutique hotel demonstrated exceptional expertise ...
The Young Sommelier of the Year competition is open to any young person in the wine or restaurant trade working in a Chaîne des Rôtisseurs restaurant. The format is exceptionally tough and is similar to the Master Sommelier examinations.
The competition is divided into three parts; theory, service and blind tasting. The theory part is a written examination covering wine production, the law, viticulture and vinification. The service part tests a contestants skill in serving wine and Champagne. The blind tasting part requires a contestant to assess six wines by sight, nose and palate for wine colour, age, alcohol content, country of origin and appellation.
Laura Rhys (26), Head Sommelier of Hotel TerraVina, demonstrated exceptional expertise as well as the necessary composure and self confidence to win the title in the face of stiff competition.
Laura’s ultimate goal is to gain the Master of Wine qualification and says:
‘In the shorter term I would like to obtain the Master Sommelier qualification and then start to study for the MW exams. As I love travelling to vineyards I am keen to extend my travels to some more classic areas that I have not as yet visited, but also up and coming areas and places to watch, such as Eastern Europe, India and China. I greatly enjoy training and in my role as Head Sommelier here at TerraVina, I will take full advantage of Gerard’s ability to motivate, enthuse and teach. I love competing and am keen to continue taking part in the many varied Sommelier competitions on offer and contributing to raising the profile of sommeliers still further.’
