"Glenelly Estate is a family owned, exclusive and high quality wine producer from Stellenbosch in South Africa.
It was purchased by May de Lencquesaing (nee Miailhe) in 2003, when she was still at the head of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, a second growth of Pauillac. Her family has been involved in the wine world since the late 18th century, when her ancestor, Helie Miailhe, was appointed official wine broker in Bordeaux by Royal decree. The Miailhe family have since owned or co-owned many chateaux on the left bank of Bordeaux: Siran, Dauzac, Palmer, Ducru Beaucaillou, Couffran, and Citran to name a few.
May de Lencquesaing is now totally devoted to Glenelly Estate, and her goal is to become one of the premier quality producers in South Africa, just as they were back in France.
65ha of vines were planted on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, on well drained soils made primarily of decomposed granite. The hilly landscape offers a great diversity of exposures to the sun and the winds, and the relatively high elevation of the vineyard benefits from cooling airflow coming from the ocean. This allows production of wines with structure, but above all, great elegance and ageing potential.
The main focus are the Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot), but also Syrah and Chardonnay.
The wines are either single varietal, with the Glass Collection Range, or blended, with the Grand Vin and flagship wine, the Lady May.
This evening we are privileged to have with us to present the wines, Nicolas Bureau, one of two family members to be involved in the day to day running of Glenelly alongside May de Lencquesaing. After having worked for a London wine Merchant and a Champagne house,Nicolas is now proud to work with his family and to be the 8th generation involved inthe business.
